The SPTO publishes its final figures for 2024

Statistics help us to see what the results of our activity are, and to be able to move forward with a certain perspective and thus be able to direct our efforts in a more specific and accurate way.

With this in mind, the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) has published the final figures corresponding to the statistics of the different industrial property modalities for 2024.

Analyzing modality by modality, and as regards distinctive signs, 2024 has been the year with the highest number of applications for registration of the entire historical series of national trademarks and trade names. Specifically, applications for national trademarks grew by 5.1% with respect to the previous year, and trade names by 2.1%, to reach an all-time high.

With regard to inventions, the increase, for the second consecutive year, of European patent validations filed in Spain (+12.7%) is noteworthy.

National patents, after the upturn in 2023, fall by 10.9% and return to the figures of 2022. This decrease comes mainly from the fall in PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) patents in the national phase, as national patent applications are up 2.2% compared to last year.

The other types of inventions show disparate behavior. While applications for utility models fell by 3.7% in 2024, those for supplementary protection certificates grew by 9.6%.

Industrial design applications maintain good numbers after the exponential rise in 2023. Thus, although the total number of designs fell slightly (4.3%, whereas in 2023 there was a 33.6% year-on-year increase), the number of applications continued to rise (3.1%).

The percentage of grants rose to 54% for national patents and 86% for utility models, trademarks and trade names.

Finally, as regards challenges, the number of appeals fell by 11.7%, while applications for invalidity and revocation remained at the same figures as in 2023: 455 applications in 2024, 65% of which corresponded to invalidity proceedings, an increase since the previous year.
