Barcelona's free trade zone becomes the first in the world to receive the OECD's certificate of security and transparency

A free zone is a territory of a country that has certain tax and customs benefits for goods, in order to promote the development of foreign trade activities. Spain has seven free trade zones, located in Santander, Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Cadiz, Seville, Vigo, and Barcelona.

The Barcelona Free Trade Zone (CZFB) was the first free trade zone in the world to receive the Free Trade Zone Certificate from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This is the first distinction that serves to establish the criteria of security and transparency in international trade of these zones of economic activity worldwide.

This zone has thus been recognized as a global benchmark in its area of activity, for its business oriented towards innovation, industry 4.0 and sustainability, and its strong commitment to transparency in management and security in international trade.

The presentation of this recognition took place during the first Forum on Combating Illicit Trade, held on March 18-19 at the OECD headquarters in Paris, and brought together distinguished representatives of the OECD, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Association of Certification Companies (TIC Council).

OECD Trade Director Marion Jansen chaired the event and was accompanied by the Director of the Observatory of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), Patricia García-Escudero, the Spanish Ambassador to the OECD, Ximo Puig, and the Executive Director of the Association of Certification Companies (TIC Council), and their teams.

This certification of the free trade zone is a milestone in the fight against illicit trade and counterfeit products and is an example of how public-private collaboration is essential in the fight against the infringement of industrial property rights.
