Europe 2020: the European Commission proposes a new economic strategy for europe
Last Wednesday, March 3, the Commission presented a communication with which it intends to implement Strategy 2020, aimed at helping Europe emerge from the crisis and prepare its economy for the next decade. Within this strategy, the Commission has identified three key aspects:
1. Smart growth, translated into the need to promote knowledge, innovation, education and the digital society.
2. Sustainable growth, so as to foment more efficient production in terms of resources and strengthening competitiveness.
3. Inclusive growth, for increasing participation in the job market, obtaining skills and the fight against poverty.
Moreover, and in relation to the three aspects considered, the Strategy contains 7 'flagship initiatives', which entail 'innovation union', a 'youth on the move', a 'digital agenda for Europe', a 'resource efficient Europe', an 'industrial policy for the globalization era', an 'agenda for new skills and jobs', and a 'European platform against poverty'.
As part of the initiative for an 'innovation union', the document proposes improving the “general conditions that favor innovation on behalf of companies", including “creating the single EU Patent and a specialized Patent Court, modernizing the framework of copyright and trademarks and improving access of SME’s to Intellectual Property Protection.”
For its part, the initiative consists of “an industrial policy of the globalization era” where one of its key measures entails “improving the conditions for enforcing Intellectual Property.”
In conclusion, it could be stated that Intellectual Property rights play a significant role in the strategy, within which the Commission plans on catalyzing the competitiveness of the European economy after the Lisbon Strategy.
