EUIPO Observatory new studyThe EUIPO Observatory has conducted a new study on the economic impact of counterfeiting in the clothing, cosmetics and toy sectors in the European Union (EU). Of the three sectors studied, the toy industry is the most affected in Europe by counterfeiting, with losses of 8.7% in sales volume per year, representing more than one billion euros (5.2% in clothing and 4.8% in cosmetics). In Spain, counterfeiting costs the clothing, cosmetics and toy sectors 1,511 million euros and more than 15,000 jobs per year. In absolute value the annual losses in the EU for the clothing sector are almost 12,000 million euros and for the cosmetics sector more than 3,100 million euros. In the three sectors studied, counterfeiting causes the loss of almost 200,000 jobs in the EU per year. In addition to the economic losses and the effects on the labor market, the report points out that counterfeiting in the cosmetics and toy sectors in particular can pose significant health and safety risks to consumers.
