The fashion sector united against counterfeits

The Madrid es Moda project, framed under the umbrella of the municipal program Madrid Capital de la Moda (MCDM), seeks to value and create business opportunities for Spanish designer fashion brands in union with the values of the city of Madrid.

On September 7, the opening event of Madrid es Moda was held at the National Archaeological Museum of Madrid. The event has become a global loudspeaker against the counterfeit market, having included the presentation and signing of a manifesto against the counterfeit market. It has the support of the Madrid City Council through its MCDM initiative, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), ANDEMA (Association for the Defense of Trademarks) and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, O.A. (OEPM).

At present, and according to the latest data for 2023 provided by the EUIPO, 20% of Spanish citizens admit to having bought counterfeit products in the last twelve months. This figure is well above the European Union average of 13%. Counterfeit products and their low quality, not subject to safety controls, can put people's health and safety at risk.

At the same time, these illegal products without any type of control, impede their traceability, violate the rights of consumers and eliminate any possibility of complaint by the latter.

The city of Madrid is part of the European network of "Autenticities", through the signing of an agreement between the Madrid City Council and the SPTO for this purpose. This is an initiative promoted within the EUIPO to which the SPTO is firmly committed in order to promote awareness of the value of Industrial Property and the negative impact of counterfeiting, as well as to favor the fight against counterfeiting at the local level.

The event was a resounding vindication of this problem, which materialized in the parade of some models wearing T-shirts with original anti-counterfeiting messages, such as Don't fake it. Make it, Original is chic, Intellectual property = future, Fake kills design future, Wear real or Buy originals not a fake. The EUIPO has chosen Madrid, Autenticiudad, as the setting for this action after assessing the defense of the sector carried out by the Madrid City Council and specifically its project Madrid es Moda in recent years.

The event ended with the reading and signing of a manifesto against the counterfeit market and in favor of author's fashion, brands and their industrial property.
