A card (or passport) personalization system is described that includes a print mechanism with one or more DOD print heads. A maintenance routine, also referred to as a spitting routine, is described where one or more nozzles of the DOD print head is electrically actuated a plurality of times in rapid succession, each actuation emitting a small drop of ink. The small drops of ink join together in flight after being ejected to create one or more larger waste ink drops. The larger ink drop(s) has less tendency to aerosolize which reduces aerosol contamination of the nozzle plate and the nozzle.

Methods and systems for configuring and rendering a fluorescent watermark can involve modifying a non-partially reflecting/absorbing ultraviolet ink from an original ultraviolet pattern by blending a minimal amount of a partially reflecting ink, and ensuring that the modification of the non-partially reflecting/absorbing ultraviolet ink maintains an appearance of two or more pattern inks as a single color/pattern under office lighting when rendered as a part of a fluorescent watermark based on the non-partially reflecting/absorbing ultraviolet ink. The fluorescent watermark can be then rendered on a substrate (e.g., paper or other material).

The present invention provides a preparation method for an anti-sedimentation, inorganic-pigment, color-variable, anti-counterfeiting printing ink. The method comprises: first, using fillers and a pigment to prepare slurries separately, and controlling particle sizes of the fillers to create particle size mismatch among three fillers; while mixing the slurries with a partial amount of a polyvinyl butyral slurry, allowing the particle-size-mismatched fillers to be fully encapsulated by resin to form a well-suspended mixed slurry; then, performing low-speed grinding of the mixed slurry together with organic bentonite to further improve the suspension performance of the mixed slurry; on this basis, adding and dispersing an acrylic acid slurry and thermochromic capsules to further encapsulate the pigment and the fillers by the resin; and finally, using the remaining polyvinyl butyral slurry and additives to adjust the formulation, so as to increase the viscosity of the material. The resulting anti-counterfeiting ink maintains high anti-counterfeiting performance while exhibiting minimal sedimentation after prolonged storage and demonstrates good usability.
