Publication of the brochure and infographic "The OEPM in figures 2020"The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, O.A. (OEPM) has published the data and figures of patents, utility models, trademarks, trade names and designs related to the year 2020. In addition, this year the data on applications for Patents Technological Reports (ITP) are included for the first time, which is the non-free technological information service of the OEPM most demanded by applicants. The brochure also includes international applications of Spanish origin through the PCT system, through the Madrid system (international trademark) and the Hague system (international design), as well as regional applications of Spanish origin, European Patent, European Union Trademark and Community Design. The sources used for the preparation of this brochure have been the Databases of the OEPM, as well as those of the European Patent Office (EPO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Intellectual Property Office of the European Union (EUIPO). An infographic with the most relevant data has also been published. From the report, it stands out that for the first time in ten years the number of applications for the protection of inventions has increased, reversing the downward trend sustained in recent years that has been even more pronounced since the entry into force of Law 24/2015 of Patents on April 1, 2017. This increase, which was approximately 20%, is due in part to the pandemic caused by the COVID19 disease, these being applications for patents and utility models related to medical technologies. Patents The number of national patent applications in 2020 was 1,483 compared to 1,358 filed in 2019, which shows an increase of 9.2%. Utility Models In 2020, 3,419 utility models have been requested at the OEPM, increasing the number of applications by 24.9% compared to 2019, the highest percentage increase in the entire history of utility models and the largest number of requests from the last 20 years. Patent Technology Reports In 2020, 353 applications for Patent Technology Reports (ITP) have been requested at the OEPM, and the number of ITPs carried out has reached 345, showing a decrease of 20.7% in relation to 2019. Trademarks In 2020, 51,120 trademarks were requested (presented by residents in Spain and non-residents) at the OEPM, increasing the figures by 0.8% compared to the previous year. Trade names In 2020, 12,267 national trade names were requested at the OEPM (both by residents in Spain and by non-residents), which represents a rise of 5.6% compared to the previous year. Industrial Designs In 2020, 12,224 industrial designs were requested at the OEPM (both by residents in Spain and by non-residents), showing a decrease of 22.5% compared to 2019, which continues with the fall appreciated in the two years previous. International and regional applications of Spanish origin The data of international applications of Spanish origin filed through the PCT system, the Madrid system (international trademark), the Hague system (international design) and regional applications of Spanish origin have shown slight decreases with the exception of international designs, as can be seen in the following table.
